Speaker Bio
Aase B. Mikalsen is an associate professor working in the field of fish virology. She has for more than two decades studied viruses affecting Atlantic salmon in Norwegian aquaculture and has participated in initial discover and/or characterization of several of the viruses and also performed studies on agent-host interactions and vaccine development on viruses. More specifically her work has included the orthomyxovirus infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV), the birnavirus infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV), five piscine toti-like virus including piscine myocarditis virus (PMCV), the reovirus piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) and the calicivirus Atlantic salmon calicivirus. She has been involved in research on the toti-like virus PMCV since its first discovery and characterization in 2011 and is at present involved in projects related to further characterization of the PMCV, with specific focus on genomic sequence studies and characterization of the peculiar third protein encoded by the virus, not seen in any viruses belonging to Totiviridae, the virus family with closest resemblance. She is also at present managing a project related to the alphavirus Salmonid alphavirus and recombination products like defect viral genomes (DVGs) with its impact on disease development, host response and therapeutic possibilities.

Aase B. Mikalsen is assisting in management of the Aquamedicine unit headed by Professor Øystein Evensen. The unit is a part of Dept. of paraclinical sciences, Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Ås, close to Oslo, Norway.
