Dr. Sutherland received her B.S. in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry from The University of Tulsa in 2011. She earned her Ph.D. degree in Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology in 2018 from Vanderbilt University in the laboratory of Dr. Terence Dermody. Dr. Sutherland’s thesis work was focused on viral and cellular determinants of mammalian orthoreovirus neurovirulence. She currently works as the lab manager for the Dermody laboratory and is a Research Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Sutherland’s research focus involves collaborations with structural biologists to investigate how mammalian orthoreovirus binds to neuronally expressed receptors.
