Heather Knudsen, P.Eng., is a Senior Research Officer at the National Research Council (NRC) in the Construction Research Centre, where she leads the Carbon Accounting, Life Cycle Assessment, and Benchmarking theme within the Low Carbon Built Environment challenge program. Additionally, she manages an initiative that provides data and research to support technical National Model Code Committee decision-making on energy and greenhouse gas emissions provisions. This initiative, a partnership between the NRC and Natural Resources Canada, has been pivotal in shaping energy code development, starting with the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2011—the first energy code introduced in Canada in 14 years. Heather initially served as a technical advisor to the energy code committees at the NRC, playing a crucial role in the development of the 2011 and 2015 versions of the NECB. With over 25 years of experience in the construction industry, she began her career in building science consulting engineering, specializing in building envelope systems, after obtaining her Environmental Engineering degree from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.
