John Alan Jack is an elected Member of Council for the Huu-ay-aht First Nations in his fourth term of office. He is also the HFN’s representative to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and he has been its Chairperson since 2017. John is also a member of the Board of Governors for Vancouver Island University. As a Member of Council for HFN, he has held the following portfolio files: finance, economic development, treaty implementation, law and policy development, external relations; and he has also been a director for HFN-owned entities such the Huu-ay-aht Group of Businesses and Huumiis Ventures Limited Partnership, which holds HFN’s 35% interest in TFL 44. John believes that economic partnerships are the key to fulsome reconciliation efforts, and believes that the best route to self-reliance for indigenous communities is to help create value in the globalized economy and share in that value creation. He advocates for deeper and wider involvement of his and other communities in the economy and that this involvement can increase not only the opportunities for its people and revenues for the nation, but also aid in having indigenous values be used in the ownership and control of businesses. John is the grandson of a commercial fisherman and the son of a faller, he lives in the Oceanside area with his patient wife, two young daughters and toddler son.
