Speaker Bio
Artem Babaian, PhD is a Banting Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge. He earned a Hons. BSc in Molecular Genetics from McMaster University, and a PhD in Medical Genetics from the University of British Columbia studying the role of endogenous retroviruses in driving human cancer evolution.
Dr. Babaian is the head of the Serratus project, an international collaboration to leverage massive-scale computing in the re-analysis of all public sequencing data to discover RNA viruses. Using a state-of-the-art cloud-computing platform, he analyzed 5.7 million sequencing datasets to discover >130,000 new RNA viruses (where only 15,000 RNA viruses were publicly described previously). This analysis of over 20 million gigabytes was completed in only 11 days.
Dr. Babaian founded the Open Virome, a free and transparent database to catalogue all of Earth's vast viral diversity through real-time surveillance of our planet’s sequencing data. The objective is to establish completely free and transparent technical infrastructure to accelerate pandemic response in future outbreaks.
