Name
From Data to Action: Reducing Construction Emissions
Date
Thursday, June 6, 2024
Time
9:35 AM - 10:35 AM
Description

The building industry is responsible for a significant share of the world’s GHG emissions. A building’s embodied carbon (from extraction, manufacture, transport, construction and disposal of building materials) has traditionally been overlooked or underestimated in the assessment of a building’s environmental impact. To address this challenge, the construction industry needs to measure and reduce the embodied carbon of buildings accurately and consistently. This session will provide insight on the efforts by three contractors to track A1-A5 emissions at a project level to assess as-built embodied carbon, how they got here, and why it’s needed. Current processes, preliminary results from Canadian projects, and lessons learned will be shared, and the importance of engaging subcontractors and vendors will be discussed. They will address the need to develop consistent processes across the industry to aid in data sharing with designers and owners and reducing barriers to adoption for the broader industry.
