Speaker Bio
Angelene Prakash [pruh-KAHSH] is a social justice podcaster and activist residing on the stolen lands of Qayqayt First Nation and other Coast Salish Peoples. She is an uninvited first-generation settler in so-called Canada and a descendant of Indian indentured labourers who were taken to the Fiji Islands to work on plantations for the British Empire from 1879 to 1921. As a community organizer, Angelene’s passions lie in creating and fostering inclusive spaces that push the boundaries of the broader society’s comfort levels. Research into her Indo-Fijian ancestry compelled her to found No Ties 1879, a podcast where she and her brother discuss their experiences growing up and living in a predominantly white neighbourhood, and raise awareness about the indentured labour system.
