Speaker Bio
Qwisun Yoon-Potkins (she/her) is a Korean/English settler living on the traditional homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, colonially known as East Vancouver. She recently completed her Master’s of Arts degree in Educational Studies at UBC, with her thesis "Reimagining Sexual Health Education: Centering Youth Voice.” Her work explores how bottom-up approaches to sex ed, centering the experiences and stories of secondary-school-aged youth, have the potential to shift dominant narratives – including narratives about menstruation – not only for youth individually, but also within and beyond their wider communities. During her time as a graduate student, Qwisun briefly took a position with a Vancouver-based period pain relief company, giving her the opportunity to intimately learn about menstruation, pelvic pain, the gender pain gap, and more in relation to menstruation equity, and was able to incorporate this knowledge into her thesis work. Qwisun believes that conversations about menstruation, and sexual health in general, must be normalized, and is excited to act as a moderator for this symposium.
