Speaker Bio
Hélène Marcoux (MSc, RPF) is the Director of the UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest and Co-Director of UBC’s Master of Sustainable Forest Management program. With over 20 years of experience as an ecologist, Registered Professional Forester, post-secondary instructor, and “bush” worker, Hélène brings both practical and academic perspectives to her work.
Hélène began her career working in land reclamation in the mining and oil and gas sectors before finding her true calling in forestry. She spent seven seasons tree planting across BC and went on to complete a Master’s in Forest Sciences at UBC, studying wildfire history in the East Kootenays.
Before joining the Research Forest, Hélène taught for seven years in the Renewable Resources Department at BCIT, where she also served on the BCIT Woodlot board. Her work spans silviculture, forest health, soil science, and small-scale community forestry. She’s passionate about revealing the value and complexity of managed forests – and all things wood!
A mother of two young boys, Hélène loves reading and enjoys any self-propelled outdoor adventure — by canoe, foot, or bike.
